Launch of the Military SDDC Knowledge Management (KM) Portal
As part of the program at the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC), during 2009 the CAMRIS/SDDC KM team conducted work so that SDDC could launch a new Portal in January 2010. The team developed a KM Portal Implementation Plan that enabled the SDDC G6 to deploy the portal using a “spiral development” approach. This approach avoids overwhelming users with new functionality and processes. The new portal, the main component behind the SDDC KM initiative, had more than 1,800 new users by mid-February 2010. The CAMRIS/SDDC team developed KM business rules, space for Communities of Practice (CoP), and an expert directory.
When Haiti experienced an earthquake the team expedited spiral releases to meet the emerging need for collaboration on support to Haiti and opened up the Haiti CoP, a real world test of the system. This demonstrated how the Portal provides faster knowledge sharing, CoPs, and enables the user-base to create knowledge and facilitate decision-making.
CAMRIS International also conducted training for SDDC military, civilians, and Contractor personnel in “Knowledge Management Professional (KM) Development Seminars” at Fort Eustis, VA (FEVA) and Scott Air Force Base (SAFB). KM training provided SDDC personnel an understanding of KM principles and processes, awareness of KM tools available, content management, and reinforced the location of Knowledge assets maintained in SDDC. Training focused on providing the skills needed for SDDC to apply KM principles in day-to-day operations.
This work is supported by the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC) Contract No. W81GYE-09-C-0011.
