USAID MEASURE DHS Contract

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has selected the Macro team, including CAMRIS as a substantial subcontractor, to implement the MEASURE Phase III Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) contract. This $142 million, five-year contract will serve as the Bureau for Global Health’s primary demographic and health data collection effort. For nearly 20 years the DHS has been a major part of USAID’s initiatives to help developing countries collect and use data to monitor and evaluate population, health, and nutrition programs. Over 200 surveys have been compelted to date in more than 80 developing countries. MEASURE DHS surveys are large, nationally representative efforts, typically including 5,000 to 30,000 households and more than 10,000 respondents. The surveys cover a range of topics including family planning, reproductive health, child health, nutrition, HIV/AIDS, gender, and infectious diseases including malaria. The MEASURE DHS Phase III project also supports biomarker testing, providing countries with information on national rates of HIV, malaria, anemia, and other health threats. “The MEASURE DHS project is considered the ‘gold standard’ in national survey research,” said Ann Way, the project director. “DHS surveys are widely respected and used worldwide,” said Dr. Way. “For the new project, we will expand efforts to build local capacity to collect, analyze, and use demographic and health data in close collaboration with our project partners: The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, PATH, CAMRIS, Blue Raster, and The Futures Institute.”
